Comfy and flattering!
Very comfortable shorts. I agree that the big hipped and small waisted person isn't the best for this style. However, I have that build and still love them even though the waist is quite loose. I am travelling around New Zealand and the pockets are just super for stuffing things into them - they are deep and secure. Love the back zip pocket for important things like cash and ID! Also, as mentioned before they do not ride up and I can wear them with comfortable briefs and no panty lines. Seem to dry fast - great length.

I own a few pairs
Soft, nice fit. They don't ride up with a pack, don't ride up period. VERY FLATTERING on the butt, nice little back zip pocket and DEEP front pockets, great if you like to stick your hands in your pockets like I do. The perfect length as well, not too short but still show off some leg.

reasonable short
This is a nice average short. The size is trim fitting, and they appear to dry quickly. Plan to test them in the wilds of Canada shortly, and will let you no how they hold up.

I bought these shorts yesterday from a local outfitters. Today I did a 8 mile dayhike in them. They didn't bunch up at all. I had some leg rash from running in a different pair of shorts, and was worried hiking would make it worse. But these shorts didn't rub my skin at all. They are a soft cotton fiber and felt cool under the direct sunlight of the high desert. I have muscular thighs and found these shorts to fit me very comfortably. I am buying another pair here because they are on sale. I recommend you do the same!
