New Jersey

The Garden States capital is located in Trenton, and the state has a land area of 8,722 square miles. New Jersey's highest point is High Point at 1,803 feet and its lowest point is at sea level along the Atlantic Coast. New Jersey has sovereignty over most of Ellis Island, part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument in New York Harbor. New Jersey entered the Union on Dec. 18, 1787, as the third of the original 13 states. During the American Revolution, it had been the scene of several important events, including George Washington?s crossing of the Delaware in December 1776 to defeat the British at Trenton, now the state capital. The state is named for the Isle of Jersey, in the English Channel, the birthplace of Sir George Carteret, who in 1644 became a part owner of what is now New Jersey. New Jersey is known as the Garden State.
