The Free States capital is located in Annapolis, and the state has a land area of 12,407 square miles. Maryland's highest point is Backbone Mountain at 3,360 feet and its lowest point located at sea level along the coast. The Potomac R. forms most of Maryland's West boundary, and Chesapeake Bay deeply indents the Eastern section of the state. Baltimore, Maryland's largest city, is a major seaport, and the SE region of the state produces large quantities of broiler chickens. The state is named for Henrietta Maria, the wife of Charles I of England. Maryland is called the Old Line State and the Free State.
