The Hawkeye States capital is located in Des Moines, and the state has a land area of 56,276 square miles. Iowa's highest point is Ocheyedan Mound at 1,670 feet and its lowest point is the Mississippi River at 480 feet. Iowa became the 29th State in 1846. It is known as the Hawkeye State, and Des Moines is the capital city. Iowa is bordered by two great American rivers (the Mississippi and the Missouri) on its east and west sides. It has a rich agricultural tradition and ranks first in the nation with corn and soybean production as well as in hog production from its 93,000 farms. <br><br> Iowa was home to many famous individuals such as Herbert Hoover, John Wayne, Glenn Miller and Grant Wood, to name a few. It was part of the Lewis and Clark expedition and many other historic events.
